[Lust thought about sending individual thank yous, but that seemed like a great deal of work. And she's noticed that it's common to draw attention to these sorts of things. So she decides to simply make a general address.]

I just wanted to express my appreciation for the kind...birthday acknowledgements.

[She really isn't sure what else to call the gifts and cards and words. It's all been a bit overwhelming.]

I'd forgotten it had come around again. It's only my second one.

I suppose I should get used to celebrating it. Or at least make an effort to remember the date next year.

Well, I suppose that's also applicable. I've only been living this life for over a year.

Your life here, you mean? I guess I understand that. It's a pretty big break from what I was doing before I got here.

Yes. My last life ended, now there's this one. And it's very different indeed.

[He leans on the word. Makes connections. Laughs softly, a little ironically. Maybe it's a pretty common backstory among the people here--their last lives ending, that is, in whatever way that meant.

And now there's this one.]

Yeah, guess we could both say that again. 'Least "very different" means "very improved," in my case.

Yes, this is a far better life than the one I had.

It's an oft repeated sentiment.

That's what I'm gathering.

Can't say I can complain. The premise is cute, and the company's good. Random furry escapades aside, I think I could really get used to it here.

[But, anyway!]

Well, here's to another year of that for you, then, Lust.

It's surprising how quickly it all becomes normal and expected.

I have two homes here. A profession - a real profession. I have a family. This world has given me everything my own promised but ripped from beneath me.

Yeah, it does that, doesn't it? Good to hear it's really working out for you. Y'know, 'cause you seem nice, but hopefully it'll mean good things in store for me, too.

It's a miraculous thing.

This world is to thank for that. It's been good to me, and good for me. I wasn't always nice. But in a small defense, I simply didn't know any better.

I don't know anyone who's been done ill by this place.

That's really good to hear. I wasn't always so nice, either.

You're in perfectly fine company, then.

Many of us find this place a second chance, of sorts.

So, your birthday. Think it's more a celebration of that second chance?

Honestly, I don't know. I never even thought about birthdays before. I didn't celebrate it properly last year, I only learned about it the day before.

I think my anniversary of coming to this place is more a celebration of this life. My birthday...it marks more than that. It's the anniversary of the day I first came into existence, in any form.

[He thinks about that for a moment, then:]

Sorry 'bout all the questions, by the way, if it sounds like I'm grilling you. I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about some of this stuff myself, and my usual conversation partner didn't come along with me when I got here.

No, it's perfectly alright. I'm comfortable discussing these things.

My view on anniversaries is likely skewed. This is my third life.

[He whistles, impressed.]

I'd be more surprised, but, well. This place is funny like that, huh? Different worlds, different possibilities.

Very different worlds.

So I have my first natural birth. And then there is my rebirth, after my first natural death. And then this is my entry to this life.

I celebrate the first and last.

[And not the second.]

I can understand that.

[He pauses for a moment, then continues.]

I told you my name was York, right? It isn't exactly, actually, and it's been a long time since anyone called me that. I wouldn't use it now if I were on my own. But the people I'm traveling with, that's how they know me, from that second life of mine.

...Figuratively, of course. My world didn't really allow for more than the one natural death.

I can understand that. I had a name, when I was first born, but I don't know it. I don't remember it. Lust was the name given to me when I was remade, it's the only name I know.

It's frowned upon, where I come from, to try and revive the dead. And for good reason. Most people don't even know it's a possibility.

Even in worlds where it's completely impossible, people find ways to try. Ways to drag those memories around with them when they should've let go.

It's only natural.

I know it's a terrible thing, but I can't honestly speak against it. I like existing, even if I don't remember my first life. I have this one.

Mmm, well.

I hit my one and only natural death because of something like that, so.

My own remaking led to...unfortunate events as well.

Some prices end up paid by more than just the one making the purchase.

Yeah, you don't have to tell me that.

But you're right. I can't complain about having a second opportunity here. Not when it gives us a chance to repair some of the damage done, too.
