"Anyone would be embarrassed. There's a reason I was doing it in the middle of the night alone." He wasn't pushing her away or pulling away from her, so Lust stayed where she was, leaning lightly into him. There was just something comforting and soothing about his physical presence.
"This is what you get for not sending a message first."
"Me like this. I wasn't prepared for company tonight."
She showed him more of herself than she did most, but she still kept up walls. They both did. They were private people who weren't comfortable with emotion and unfamiliar with this sort of attachment and need for someone else. She prepared herself to spend time with him, mentally and physically.
"I barely noticed a difference beyond 'mildly buzzed and angry at me," he said honestly, still standing awkwardly still. Scar hardly noticed or cared about physical preparations. If anything, it was less nerve-wracking to be around her when she wasn't so put together.
"...I'm not certain I like the deeper implications of that." But Lust made a noise that was closer to laughter than anything else.
"You can relax, Scar, I'm not angry at you. You just caught me off guard at the end of a frustrating day. Haven't you ever been caught doing something silly you didn't want to be caught at?"
"And of course I have. Everyone has." He wasn't too keen on giving any recent examples, though. And he didn't dare say that he never looked like he was about to burst into tears when it happened.
Somehow, some way, Lust was going to show Scar what relaxed really was. She didn't know how, but she would. She didn't disbelieve his statement, she only thought that Scar honestly didn't know what it really felt like.
"Then you know how embarrassing it is. I...don't like to be embarrassed. It's another one of those strong emotions that's difficult for me to regulate."
Scar sighed quietly. He didn't know exactly what to do in this situation, but he had some idea. He rested one hand on top of her head, finally returning the embrace in some fashion, awkward as it was. It was less awkward than a full-on hug, at least for Scar.
"I'll feed your shoes to Yaminah next time, then."
"And then you'll have to replace my shoes, I need those." From Scar, even a hand on her head was a great triumph. He wasn't a physical person, but he tried. Lust appreciated the effort - small as it seemed, it was monumental.
"Just send me a message the next time you decide to break into my home in the middle of the night."
"I always end up waking you up." There, that was an excuse! Scar was nearly positive that he had woken her from sleep on more than one occasion, given how groggy she sometimes was when she answered her 'Gear.
"You can wake me up. You're one of the few with that privileged. For god's sake you're..." Lust found herself waving her hand vaguely instead of trying to finish the sentence. She hated putting words to it. It was almost as though somehow speaking it would shatter everything between them. Ridiculous, perhaps, but she didn't think it was out of the realm of possibility.
"You know what you are. I don't mind when you wake me."
"Fine," he conceded, a note of amusement actually crossing Scar's voice when Lust tried and failed to describe exactly what he supposedly was. He wiped the fondness from his face as soon as it had appeared, but it was there for a fraction of a moment.
His hand briefly stroked through her hair before he let it fall back to his side and pretended he hadn't done anything.
He was just hers, Lust finally decided to herself. There weren't any words to properly describe it.
"Thank you." She didn't draw back. As long as she was allowed, she was going to stay where she was, savoring the small contact between them. "You're lucky you didn't stumble into Henry during one of his berry-fueled recreations. He might have thrown things at you."
"Oh, there's a particular berry that apparently offers cerebral effects without the sickness." Lust just waved a hand again, dismissive. She wasn't going to mention that she sometimes partook.
"That's what Henry does for fun sometimes. He's some sort of artist."
Cerebral effects. Scar's eyes narrowed. He didn't care one way or the other about Henry, but he couldn't help his paranoid brain jumping to the worst conclusion possible.
"If it is, I suppose that's his choice, he's an adult. What does it matter? He just gets confused and paranoid, he doesn't cause any harm." Lust shrugged. It wasn't as though Henry were a danger to her.
"I suspect he does it for the same reasons I enjoy wine and chocolate - to help banish bad feelings and memories."
Everyone had them, and it seemed the inhabitants of this house had more than most. She doubted Henry was an exception, from what she knew of him.

"And you're embarrassed by utterly ridiculous things," he countered.
Says the man who snuck in to avoid being caught talking to her.
He didn't know what else to do at the moment, so he stayed still.

He was just glad that was over.

She'd had none of that preparation this time.

Was he joking? God only knows.

"That's what Henry does for fun sometimes. He's some sort of artist."
As though that explained it all.

"That sounds dangerous."
